Our Frieze Los Angeles 2023 presentation brings together a tightly-curated selection of artists who broaden the spectrum of stories and diasporic cultures portrayed in contemporary art. Reflecting a diverse range of subjects, styles, and strategies, the artists on view are propelled by the question “who, and what, gets to be the subject of an artwork?” Depictions of their communities, family, and friends suggest that, for these artists, portraiture remains a profound social practice. To this end, the exhibited artists, from emergent to established voices, broaden the spectrum of stories portrayed in contemporary art and explore the stories portraits tell.

Artists on view include Amoako Boafo, Daniel Crews-Chubb, Lenz Geerk, Jeffrey Gibson, Mia Middleton, Collins Obijiaku, Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, Betye Saar, Kehinde Wiley and Brenna Youngblood.

Roberts Projects booth is located at C12.

Taking place for the first time at Santa Monica Airport, Frieze Los Angeles features more than 120 galleries, including new specialists in 20th-century art, alongside restaurants and Frieze Projects spread across the multiple sites.
