Betye Saar - Shop - Roberts Projects LA

Text by Camille Mary Weiner.

Published for the artist's solo presentation at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016, Betye Saar: Ritual spans three decades of work organized under the unifying idea of ritual. The presentation centers around a major historical assemblage - Mti, 1973 - which takes its form as a freestanding altarpiece fusing together gypsy, Indian, and voodoo cultural symbols. Accompanying assemblage and collage works chosen for their reoccurring themes exploring the transformation of rituals and cultural symbols will be arranged in three distinct groupings on the surrounding walls. The resulting installation renegotiates the aesthicization of ritualized action, concepts of power and display, the transferal of installation as sculpture, and how agency simultaneously resides in the objecthood of art and its transmitted communicative qualities.

This publication accompanies the exhibition Betye Saar: Ritual at Art Basel Miami Beach, Roberts & Tilton Stand S06 (December 1 - 4, 2016).
