Wangari Mathenge's (b.1973, Nairobi, Kenya; based in Chicago, IL) work is dedicated to the investigation and incorporation of an integrated visual testimony of the oft-discounted black female experience within the context of existing simultaneously within two cultures; here, both traditional African society and the Diaspora. Mathenge received an LL.M. in International Business and Economic Law from both Howard University and Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, D.C., and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago. 

Recent exhibitions include Wangari Mathenge: Re-membering, Lévy Gorvy Dayan Gallery, New York, NY (2026); Everything Now All At Once, Nasher Museum of Art, Duke University, Durham, NC (2025); Bold: New Voices in Contemporary Art, Newfields, Indianapolis, IN (2025); Tidal Wave of Colour, Roberts Projects, Los Angeles, CA (2023), A Day of Rest, Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London, UK (2023); When We See Us, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Cape Town, South Africa (2022), which traveled to Kunstmuseum Basel, Basel, Switzerland (2024), Centre for Fine Arts, Bozar, Brussels, Belgium (2025) and Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden (2025).
